BOYS TENNIS: Hickory 5, Lake Norman 3
Wildcats’ perfect run ends against Hickory
By Brian Meadows
HICKORY — The best boys tennis season in Lake Norman history ended Tuesday.
Hickory won two doubles matches after a 3-3 split in singles to dismiss previously unbeaten Lake Norman 5-3 in the quarterfinals of the 3A state dual-team playoffs.
“Very disappointing to come all this way and lose,” Lake Norman junior Trey McKee said. “We played probably the best team around, and I wish them the best of luck.”
The Red Tornadoes (17-2) advance to Thursday’s West Regional final, where they will battle either Charlotte Catholic or Marvin Ridge for a spot in this weekend’s state championship match.
“We didn’t come here thinking it was going to be a blowout,” Hickory’s Joe Wimmer said. “They’re a good team, but so are we.”
The match lasted 4½ hours, thanks to a 1½ hour rain delay.
Hickory led three singles matches and was tied in a fourth when play resumed.
Wimmer lost the first set 6-1 to Matt Dowell and trailed 3-2 in the second set prior to the delay. But the senior rallied to win the second set 7-5 and a tiebreaker 10-7 to give Hickory a 3-1 lead in the match.
Dowell couldn’t believe his singles match got away from him.
“I don’t know what happened there,” he said. “That’s life, I guess.”
Andrew McKinnon defeated Hickory’s Luke Synn 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1 singles to make it 3-2, and Trey McKee fought back from a narrow first-set loss to square the overall match. McKee won 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, 10-4.
“Three-all going into doubles is what we wanted,” McKee said.
Needing to win two of three doubles matches, the Wildcats (17-1) liked their chances. The McKinnon-McKee and Dowell-Timmy Johnson tandems had yet to lose a doubles match in team competition all season.
But Hickory claimed quick 3-0 leads on courts 2 and 3 and never looked back.
Lee Royster and Jeff Bowman turned back Taylor Burton and David Dyer 10-3 while Wimmer and Whit Hutton prevailed 10-3 over Dowell and Johnson. There was no need to complete the third doubles match with the teams’ fates sealed.
“It’s a sour note to end on,” Dowell said, “but we lost to a good team.”
