Wildcats’ playoff run comes to an end
By LARRY SULLIVAN
It wound up definitely not being worth the wait for Lake Norman’s baseball team Friday night.
An hour rain delay coupled with a nearly three-hour-long game combined to take its toll as the Wildcats’ most successful postseason run came to an end with an 8-0 loss to North Piedmont Conference foe East Rowan in the third round of the 3A state playoffs.
“I’m proud of these guys,’’ Lake Norman coach Robert Little said. “This was a second time in the playoffs and first time making it to the third round. A lot of other teams have waited longer than we have to make it this far.”
East Rowan (25-2), the NPC champion and top-ranked 3A team in the state, broke matters open early with a four-run second inning that knocked starting Wildcats pitcher Nick Lomascolo off the mound in one of his shortest appearances of the season. The left-hander worked into the third before giving way to reliever Ross Whitley.
At the plate, Whitley and Donnie Burt each paired base knocks, while Tyler Lewis tagged a double to join Shane Denton and Nick Keith with one hit each.
