3A TRACK AND FIELD NOTEBOOK

Barber, Ryan find friendship in competition

By Brad Norman

GREENSBORO —Tommy Ryan felt it pop right away.

Nursing an injured right hamstring, the Mooresville junior quickly slowed his pace and limped to the finish line during Friday’s 3A track and field championships.

“I tore my hamstring probably four weeks ago,” Ryan said. “I hit the first hurdle and it just snapped. I wanted to finish, just to pick up the one point for coming in eighth, but it was pretty bad.”

With pain etched on his face, Ryan crossed the finish line in 19.85 seconds and collapsed on the track. Fittingly, West Iredell senior Mark Barber was the one to jog over and help pull Ryan up.

Barber and Ryan are the top two hurdlers in the county and have developed a mutual respect and friendship after competing against each other over the years.

“We respect each other a great deal,” said Barber, who finished in 15.60 seconds to clinch fifth place. “We were always ranked No. 1 and No. 2. We try to give everybody a show.”

Barber and Ryan had a thrilling duel in the 110-meter hurdles at the 3A West Regional, with Barber besting Ryan by .01 seconds. Ryan finished ahead of Barber in the preliminary heat Friday before pulling up with his injury in the finals.

“We’ve become really good friends,” Ryan said. “It was close last year and close this year at regionals. Every time we run in meets, we always talk and hang out.”

BATTLING THE ELEMENTS
There were a few other injuries that hampered Iredell County athletes.

North Iredell senior Jasmine Morris had a sore knee after she completed the long jump, but took pride in her seventh-place finish.

“I messed up some cartilage earlier, and it’s just bothering me,” said Morris, who jumped 16 feet, 11 inches. “But I’m seventh best in the state. I’ll take it.”

West Iredell junior Jermail Rucker, scheduled to compete in the 300-meter hurdles, was a late scratch due to a hip flexor.

“I stayed out three weeks to try to get it right,” Rucker said. “I struggled through conference and was fourth at regionals, and it hurt like crazy.”

EYEING THE RECORD
Statesville senior Jordan Daywalt won the pole vault after clearing 11 feet and had a shot at breaking the state record of 12 feet, 1 inch.

“After I won with 11 feet, I had them set it up to 11-6, which I cleared,” Daywalt said. “Then we set it to 12-1 ½ to break the record. I thought I had it, I just didn’t turn myself at the top.”

A MIGHTY WIND
A strong wind slowed runners and made exchanges among relay teams and carrying the baton a tricky situation.

Such was the case for Lake Norman. The Wildcats dropped the baton during the second leg of the girls 4x200 meter relay. The wind caused the baton to roll around on the track, making it more difficult to pick up.

Lake Norman lost precious time backtracking and finished with a time of 1:58.49, nine seconds slower than its regional finish.

But Lacey Brown, Ali Miller, Katie Gradert – three of the four team members – are freshmen and have a chance to return to the state meet over within next three years.
