Better numbers have Vikings thinking big

Last year’s boys and girls track teams at South Iredell had several athletes who had never run track before, which presented problems as Vikings coaches struggled to just fill out their lineup sheet.
A swell of athletes has given South’s coaching staff a different sort of problem this year.
“I’m struggling with who not to take,” coach Brent Bustle said. “My numbers are up a whole lot. I have about 40 boys and 33 girls.”
Those numbers give the Vikings their deepest and most experienced team in years, one that already has multiple qualifiers for the 2A Midwest Regionals.
Carly Couch qualified for the regionals in both the distance-oriented 800-meter run and the 100-meter dash.
“They are opposite events,” Bustle said. “It takes a different type of kid to do both of them, but Carly works year-round.”
Courtney Saddler also qualified for the 100, and Tevin Ikard — at about 5-foot-8 — cleared 6 feet on the high jump to qualify as well.
“Tevin Ikard, he’s short but he can get up,” Bustle said. “That’s a big jump for a small guy.”
