Bill Bruckner takes special honors in AutoFairMooresville car enthusiast Bill Bruckner didn’t drive way from this year’s annual Food Lion AutoFair empty handed. His prize showcase vehicle helped see to that. Bruckner wound up being one of a select number of participants in the yearly affair to earn a specialty award, his pride and joy 1967 Pontiac GTO selected as the recipient of the Bob Laidlein Award for being the event’s Most Original. Bruckner was one of a limited number of entries earning special recognition from a panel of judges during the four-day automotive extravaganza that took place once again at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Bruckner wasn’t the only one making this year’s fair one to remember. James Chewning, of nearby Landis, was all smiles when his red-and-white 1954 Chevrolet Bel-Air captured the prestigious Best of Show Award. The restored Chevy classic was selected among more than 50 Best of Show car club winners by H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler, president and general manager of LMS. Also receiving special attention was the 1935 wineberry-colored Ford panel truck belonging to North Wilkesboro’s Larry and Glenda Cleary, winner of the Best Paint award, while Johnnie and Rachel Garner’s drive home just across the state line to Rock Hill, S.C. was more enjoyable in the 1971 Ford Mustang Mach one after picking up the Best Restoration by Owner Award. Other specialty award winners included: Donald Chamberlain of Daytona Beach, Fla., winner of the Cabarrus Cup Award for Most Creative for his 1934 Ford panel wagon; Michael McDonald of Raleigh, who captured the Mecklenburg Strelitz Award as the Ladies Choice for his 2002 silver-and-black Pontiac Trans-Am convertible; and Shane McDowell of Denton, winner of the Promoter’s Choice Award for his 1928 McCormick Deering tractor. In addition, each of the 53 car clubs participating in the AutoFair was judged individually, with Best of Show picked for each. Car enthusiasts will again converge on the site when the Goodguys Southeastern Nationals takes place Oct. 26-28. Bookmarkz |
