Blue Devils feeling good after close call with Lake Norman

From top to bottom, this is one of the more talented Mooresville girls soccer squads of the past few years.
It is also one of the most balanced.
That combination has coach Steve Stith excited about what the team can do this season and in the immediate future.
“We have what I’d call one or two actual scorers,” Stith said. “We have finishers, girls that put the ball in the net. I haven’t had a player like that on girls for a long time. Things look good.”
The Blue Devils (4-1 overall, 1-1 North Piedmont 3A) are about as balanced as possible.
The 22-member squad has six seniors and sophomores and five juniors and freshmen.
Finding the right chemistry in the starting lineup and between the age groups has been a major reason for Mooresville’s early success.
“They all get along unusually well,” Stith said. “That’s probably the most exciting thing about the season, our core group of seniors are really good friends and just set a great tone from the get-go.
“They embraced the freshmen and realized real quickly these freshmen could help them have a memorable senior season.”
Two of the five freshmen have started consistently, with Hannah Mack and Courtney Smith spending time in the midfield and as forwards.
Smith has already netted a hat trick this year and has shouldered a big part of the scoring load.
“It’s been amazing,” Smith said of playing varsity as a freshman. “I just went into the season open-minded, and I like it a lot.”
Tiffany Wilson, one of six seniors and a team captain, also has a knack for finding the back of the net.
She’s also one of Mooresville’s more vocal, respected players.
“Our team, we definitely stepped up from last year,” Wilson said. “Us being seniors, we’re good leaders and it’s definitely different. We have some good freshmen, and it seems like chemistry is better than last year. They’ve been cooperating and have been playing better than we thought they would.”
Wilson and Smith nearly combined to give the Devils a huge boost — and potentially a win — against Lake Norman on Monday.
Wilson headed in a shot in the first half that was eventually taken away due to a handball violation while Smith was just wide on a great look late in the game.
The Wildcats netted a goal with less than two minutes remaining, spoiling Mooresville’s upset bid to hand the Devils their first loss of the season.
So how hard was it to play near-perfect soccer for 88 minutes only to lose 1-0 to your main rival?
“You have no idea,” Wilson said. “It’s very devastating. What happens, happens — they got a lucky goal. We know that we tried our hardest, and that’s probably the best we’ve played as a team since I was a freshman.
“We can make it pretty far in playoffs. Like Coach says, we can probably make the state championship.”
