Mooresville’s tennis match today against Statesville will likely decide the No. 2 team to advance to the 3A state playoffs from the North Piedmont 3A.

The Blue Devils being in this position is fairly remarkable after losing so many key contributors from last season.

“When I took the team back over this year, we basically had lost most of the players from the year before,” Mooresville coach Tim Smith said. “I think we’re playing much better now.”

Mooresville’s top player, Neil Trimble, played No. 4 last season. Marshall Horsman. the No. 2 player, was No. 9 last year, but Mooresville is still in line for a top-three conference finish.

“Compared to some other teams in conference, we’re inexperienced,” Smith said. “A lot of these guys had never played matches that counted.”
