Breakthrough win gives West Iredell a boost

It has been an uphill battle this season for West Iredell’s young girls soccer team, but the Warri-ors saw their patience pay off recently, when they defeated Carson 2-1 for their first victory.

“They were really hungry for a win,” said West coach David Heintz, whose team has five goals in 17 games. “Getting that first win really lifted their spirits.”

Rhiannon Roark gave them the early boost against Carson. She scored in the fourth minute and assisted Taylor Branton’s goal one minute later for a quick 2-0 lead.

Freshman goalkeeper Rebecca Overcash recorded eight saves, including a pivotal second-half stop, to preserve the win.

“She stopped a breakaway that would have tied the game,” said Heintz, noting Overcash’s deci-sion to thrust herself on top of the ball before the Carson offensive attacker could uncork a shot. “That was really dangerous, and she made a great play.”
