Cagnazzi Racing starts fast

Mooresville-based Cagnazzi Racing’s Jed Coughlin put himself in near a No. 1 position this past weekend.

The reigning National Hot Rod Association’s POWERade Pro Stock champion drew within a mere four points of the No. 1 ranking in the world following his solid semifinal showing during the course of the 24th annual CSK Nationals held in Phoenix, Ariz.

Coughlin, who helped put is local-based team in the sport’s spotlight last season, beat a part of entries, including a former six-time world champion before losing to a fellow veteran by just one-thousandth of a second in the finals.

Coughlin actually appeared to be behind the controls of the better ace in the finals, running a 6.654 time at a speed of 207.69 miles-per-hour, but a quicker start on the part of his opponent wound up providing the latter with just the cushion he needed – barely – to post the win. The two cars were distanced by a .0013-second difference at the finish line.

“He got me at the (starting) Tree,’’ summed up a still pleased Coughlin, after his runner-up feat. “We had the better car, as the numbers bear out, but we ran out of racetrack. You hate to lose raced like that, but it does happen from time to time. We just need to make sure those losses are the exceptions rather than the rule.’

Race day began on a high note for Coughlin as the now four-time series titlist recorded a perfect .000-second reaction time in an easy 6.637-second win against a current second-year member of the field. It was the second quickest pass of the complete opening-round.

In the quarterfinals, Coughlin tamed the hotter track and posted the best elapsed time of the season, a 6.653 at 207.40 mph to get his Chevrolet Cobalt into the semifinals.

“The car really responded well today, and the guys did a great job making the necessary adjustments,” praised Coughlin of his crew quarterback by chief Roy Simmons. “We’re off to a terrific start to the season, and I’m very pleased with everything at the moment. The exciting thing is we’ve got room to get better, so we should be able to keep this run going.”

When combined with his runner-up finish at the season-opener in California two weeks ago, this second semifinal ending at Firebird International Raceway gives Coughlin 171 points, placing him just four points behind fellow Mooresville-based pilot Greg Anderson and his team.

Coughlin and the Cagnazzi Racing outfit will be idle for a few weekends before the next event, the 39th annual AC Delco NHRA Gatornationals, which will be held March 13-16 at Gainesville Raceway in Central Florida.
