North Iredell’s softball team experienced a swing of emotions during Friday’s doubleheader against Statesville.
The Raiders trailed the winless Greyhounds for most of the first game before receiving an emotional, unexpected phone call from assistant coach Angie Carlton.
Carlton helped head coach Kim James in the fall before leaving the team after being diagnosed with breast cancer.
“She called in the middle of the first game and said ‘Win these games for me,’ ” James said.
So they did.
The Raiders bounced back to win the first game 7-6 on Sarah Hayes’ RBI double and then rolled to a 16-0, three-inning victory the next game.
Heather Nellis earned the win in relief the first game and pitched an abbreviated no-hitter the second game.
“The phone call was really nice,” James said. “I also think the big difference was, because Statesville hadn’t won a lot, my girls were too confident. They thought they were going to be given the game. They realized they had to work for it.”
