Challenges loom for new-look Greyhounds

The honeymoon is over for Statesville’s boys tennis team.

The Greyhounds get back to work this week, understanding that duplicating last year’s success won’t be an easy feat. They lost their top four singles players from the 3A state championship team, which finished 13-0.

Singles state champion Preston Spencer graduated, as did Russ Ferrari and Thomas Gaither. Thomas Fanjoy, who played No. 3 singles, transferred.

“We’re better than I thought we might be,” Statesville coach Mike Williams said. “We’re still strong at the top.”

Luke Gillis and Tripp Hawkins each went 18-0 in singles matches. They return to lead a relatively young squad.

The duo is also expected to be a formidable doubles tandem, Williams said. “They stand a good chance of winning states,” he said.

Statesville’s first match is Monday at home against Newton-Conover, last year’s 2A state runner-up. On Wednesday, the Greyhounds host undefeated Lake Norman in their North Piedmont 3A opener.
