Chamber Challenge more than just golf
By Larry Sullivan
More, much more in fact, than just county-wide bragging rights will be on the tee during the course of this month’s annual Iredell Chamber Challenge golf outing.
The yearly event itself pits members of the Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber of Commerce opposite representatives of the Greater Statesville Chamber of Commerce for a round of friendly competition. This year’s event, well in the progress of securing participants, is slated to be held April 29th, doing so by offering both an early morning and early afternoon tee time to accommodate expected interest.
The tournament this time around will be held at the host Statesville Country Club. The attraction is taking place under the title sponsorship of Forest Grove Development Co.
The Challenge will have both chambers vying for the coveted traveling gold trophy that will be awarded to the organization that puts forth the best showing.
Cost of participating is $65 per individual player or $250 for complete four-player teams. Entries are being accepted now.
In order to allow as many as interested to do so, there is both an 8 a.m. and a 1 p.m. field for those wishing to play. When registering, participants are asked to indicate which of the two starting times suits them best.
Format for play will follow the player-friendly captain’s choice procedure. Under this style, each member of a team hits each shot from the best result of each previous shot. Low scores are traditionally the rule rather than the exception.
In addition to the team stroke competition, various on-course events will also take place. They will be comprised of closest-to-the-pin challenges on par-three holes as well as a long drive contest on another selection hole.
A drawing card for the special on-course affairs includes an incentive of a $10,000 prize being dangled courtesy of participating sponsor Griffin Insurance for a hole-in-one scored on a specially selected par-three hole. Additional prizes will also be distributed.
All in the field will also be treated to an unending supply of beverages and also be treated to a catered meal.
In addition to what will be taking place on the host semi-private Statesville Country Club, more activities will be taking place off it.
The facility is also home to the Dana Radar Golf School, selected to Golf Magazine’s prestigious list of the top 25 such learning centers in America. It will be offering both group and personal instruction throughout the day on all areas of the golf game.
Host SCC Professional Golf Association pro Jay Reid will offer personal golf lessons, including videos of swings, during every 15 minutes for a fee of $10 per player. Also, mini clinics limited to six players will also be held. The clinics will cover such areas as long distance putting, short distance putting, sand play, and driving.
The limited number of available slots for the clinics is filling up in a hurry, so all interested are urged to secure a reservation as soon as possible. They can do so by contacting Reid at the Dana Radar Golf School at 704-872-3022 or through email at .
To register for the golf tournament, all wishing to do so can call the local Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber of Commerce at 704-664-3898. When registering, all players are asked to indicate either the morning or afternoon playing time.
