Pitcher Lane Marlowe kept himself in the ballgame.
As a result, Trey Ramsey picked up his first win as South Iredell’s baseball coach after the Vikings’ 7-4 win over Bessemer City last week.
“He’s a very competitive kid,” Ramsey said. “I told him when his pitch count’s up, I was probably going to have to pull him. After the sixth inning, he said ‘just give me the ball.’
“It was his game to win, so I had to give it to him and he finished it off for us.”
Ramsey kept a close eye on Marlowe’s pitch count throughout the game.
He finished with 99 pitches and entered the seventh inning with 88 pitches under his belt.
Marlowe missed time at the beginning of the season after having a benign tumor removed from his appendix during the offseason.
“He’s a strong kid and he’s been stretched out quite a bit in his high school career,” Ramsey said. “We have some relief behind him, but it’s hard to keep the ball away from him. I want to keep him healthy. Hopefully he’s got a career ahead of him — there are some (colleges) looking at him.”
