Couch sets her focus on individual state title
By Brad Norman
The toughest obstacle South Iredell’s Carly Couch faced at last week’s 2A track Midwest Regional was the wind.
A stiff breeze slowed the runners throughout the 800-meter race, an event Couch won by seven seconds.
“I was pleased, although I would have liked to have had better time,” Couch said. “The wind kind of slowed everyone’s time down. Gosh, for the 200 meters the wind was against you, it was really difficult.”
Due to the wind slowing her time, Couch is seeded fifth in the 800 meter at today’s 2A state championship. Her biggest competition is top-seeded Heather Beichner, a distance runner from Cardinal Gibbons.
“I definitely like my chances if it (comes down) to the end,” Couch said. “Normally if it comes down to it, a sprinter can outsprint a distance runner.”
