Lake Norman’s girls track and field team won its first two meets of the season, but today’s Iredell County Championships will be the Wildcats’ first glance at fellow North Piedmont 3A powers Mooresville and Statesville.
Coach Lewis Soulsby expects to use the meet as a barometer to gauge the team’s prospects in the end-of-season conference standings.
“That’ll be a good look for us to see where we’re really at,” Soulsby said.
The Wildcats finished fifth in the county meet last spring, and Stephanie Payne racked up 30 of their 58 team points by winning the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.
Payne graduated, but Soulsby feels the Wildcats have more balance now.
“Before we had one or two strong athletes here and there, and they would score most of our points, but we’re solid,” Soulsby said. “We’re getting first, second and third places in a lot of events.”
Freshman Elizabeth Cooke has been a pleasant addition, Soulsby said. Cooke recently set the school record in the triple jump at 32 feet, 8 inches.
