Defense rescues Warriors

Defense rode to the rescue for the area-based Iredell Warriors semi-professional football team last weekend.

Riding the effort on that side of the scrimmage line, the Warriors allowed the game’s only touchdown to stand up as the difference in a tight, 7-0 edging of the host High Point Raiders.

With the win, Iredell supported its top-tier status within the Central Carolina Football Conference, improving to the 9-1 mark overall with just this weekend’s outing remaining in regular season play.

With the defensive stand keeping the Raiders basically at bay, the game’s lone score came late in the first half. Former Mooresville Senior High product Roger Alexander lofted a 67-yard pass to receiver Alphonzo Miller for the tally that wound up making the game’s difference.

In fitting fashion, the Warriors defenders forced High Point to cough up possession on downs late in the fourth period to preserve the outcome.

For the victors, Alexander ran for nearly 60 yards and passed for another 150 more. He completed five of his passes, the biggie the one that led to the touchdown and also accounted for nearly half the total aerial yards.

On defense, in addition to holding High Point without a score, the Iredell unit limited the Raider to just over 100 total yards.

The Warriors take aim a closing out regular season play on a successful note when playing host to the Rowan Rampage on the Statesville Middle School field Saturday afternoon. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
