Devils aim for regional success
By Brad Norman
As Monday’s 3A Midwest Regional approaches, things are already looking good for Mooresville’s golf team.
And it has nothing to do with golf itself.
Monday’s weather forecast for regional site Jamestown Park Golf Course is sunny and in the high 70s.
“Last year at regionals, it was very cold, the wind was blowing and we just didn’t have a good day,” Blue Devils coach Charles “Hoppy” Hopkins said. “Hopefully that won’t be the case this year. If we play to our capabilities, we have a chance of advancing to states.”
Mooresville is one of 11 teams in the Midwest Regional trying to earn a trip to the state championship match.
The top three teams will qualify, and the top three individuals not on those teams will also advance.
“This is our third year in a row in regionals as a team,” Hopkins said. “We beat Lake Norman for the conference championship by one stroke two years ago, and we finished second to them the last two years. That makes us feel good.”
Team members are feeling good about their chances, particularly after finishing second in the tough North Piedmont 3A.
“We’ve been pretty consistent as team,” junior Jordan Shoaf said. “We haven’t really had many high scores. Hopefully we can make it to states.”
The Blue Devils lost just one golfer from last year’s regional team, No. 2 player Braxton Brannon, and have two-time NPC individual champion Josh Nelson.
Nelson, who finished sixth individually at Tuesday’s Iredell County golf championship, hopes having some sunshine will improve his performance.
“I didn’t play very well last year,” Nelson said. “I was sick and I was the first group to tee off, and it was real, real cold. Hopefully the whole team can play good enough to finish in the top three.”
Nelson, Mooresville’s No. 1 golfer, has the best chance to advance to states as an individual should the Blue Devils not qualify as a team.
“I hope for Josh’s sake, as player of the year for the second time in the conference, he gets to go some way,” Hopkins said. “What it will come down to is fairways and greens. If you can hit fairways and greens, you put yourself in position to score.”
Mooresville will play a practice round at Jamestown today to get a glimpse of the course layout.
Then Hopkins will hammer home some final points, namely to play smart, for the players to consider over the weekend.
“Every stroke counts right now,” Hopkins said. “They have to realize every stroke counts.”
