Mooresville’s boys track and field team, perhaps already the best in the state, has gotten even stronger this year after coach Michael Serefine raided the basketball program.
Serefine talked to athletic guards Justin Huntley and Tyrell Sutton and convinced each to compete in the jumping events this season.
“Our basketball team is very athletic, and we might as well put those guys to use for the school,” Serefine said. “I promised them they wouldn’t have to run with the distance guys or anything. That was a draw, and the success of the program was, too.”
Sutton is a known high-flyer on the court, and he wowed coaches and teammates the first day on the field when he cleared 6-foot-6 on the high jump — the West Regionals qualifying mark is 6-foot-2, and last year’s 3A state champion cleared 6-foot-8.
“He’s a rookie at track and field, and he has to work on his form,” Serefine said. “It’s a good experience all around for both those guys. The jumpers are pumped up. We’re going to qualify as many as we can, but we’ll be limited to three per event at regionals.”
