MOORESVILLE—The Mooresville Blue Devils avoided a season-worst three-game skid with their come-from-behind win Tuesday, and they followed it up Friday with a convincing 11-1, five-inning romp past Statesville.
“Lake Norman woke us up,” Aaron Meadows said, referring to Tuesday’s game in which Mooresville trailed most of the way but rallied to win in extra innings.
Their bats certainly weren’t sleeping against Statesville.
Mooresville (16-4, 11-4 NPC) scored five runs on five hits in the first inning. Meadows’ triple plated a pair. He finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs batting as the designated hitter.
Meadows typically catches, but Mooresville coach Jeff Burchett let him rest his legs after the senior caught nine innings against Lake Norman.
“He did pretty good, too,” Burchett said of Meadows’ first time in a DH role.
So did just about everyone else. Five other Devils drove in at least one run. Billy Nantz and Dylan West knocked in two apiece.
Meadows’ RBI single capped a three-run second inning.
Statesville starter David Moose exited afterward. He was tagged for eight runs on eight hits.
“They swung the bats really well; there isn’t much more you can say,” Statesville coach Chad Parker said.
Ian Walters picked up the win for Mooresville. He stuck out five in four innings, and allowed only one hit — Jimmy Jordan’s leadoff single in the fourth.
Adding three runs in the third, Mooresville brought the 10-run mercy rule into play.
The Greyhounds (2-15, 1-14 NPC) tried to extend the game in the fifth against reliever Jonathan Mayes.
Freshman Matt Bowers’ first career hit scored Tanner Stroud, who led off with a single.
Mayes walked Colin Morgan to load the bases, but he fanned Jordan and Moose to end the game.
“It was good for him to work out of that situation,” Burchett said.
Meadows applauded Mayes’ effort as well.
“We get to go home quicker,” Meadows said, smiling. “I love it.”
