MOORESVILLE—Mooresville’s Aisha Cannon and Leondra Pridgen were poetry in motion, dancing to and fro in between their turns in the triple jump competition Tuesday.
Rocking back and forth and smiling at one another, they grooved to the song “Run and Tell That!” from the movie “Hairspray.”
“We like to listen to music, dance and have fun out here,” Cannon said.
Mooresville’s girls track and field team had plenty of fun Tuesday as it waltzed to the Iredell County track and field championship.
It was the Blue Devils’ second straight county title and fourth in the last five years.
“It’s a very big deal, especially for the girls,” said Pridgen, who was named Most Outstanding Track Athlete after winning the 100- and 300-meter hurdles. “Our boys always finish first, which makes us want to try harder.”
The Blue Devils placed first in 10 of the 18 events to score 192½ points.
Senior Maddy Knowland won the shot put and discus and was followed in both events by teammate Tasha Stewart.
Knowland also triumphed in the high jump. Her three individual victories led to her selection as Most Outstanding Field Athlete.
“This is a very talented team,” Pridgen said.
Paced by Alexa Van Epern’s win in the 1,600 run and Rebecca Roman’s victory in the 3,200 run, Lake Norman scored 117 points. Lake Norman also won the 4x800 relay to garner its first runner-up finish in the program’s six years.
A year ago, the Wildcats were next to last in the county meet.
“Last year we laid the ground work, and I think this year it’s starting to pay off because we’re a lot deeper,” said Lake Norman coach Lewis Soulsby, whose team posted three second-place finishes and five thirds.
“I just think that we’ve made some good strides and built a solid team.”
Statesville took third with 86½ points. The Greyhounds were followed by South Iredell (76), North Iredell (56) and West Iredell (29).
The Greyhounds recorded wins in the 4x100 relay and pole vault, which Jordan Daywalt won handily.
Carly Couch (800 run) and Courtney Saddler (200 dash) nabbed first-place finishes for the Vikings.
Jasmine Morris turned in the Raiders’ sole blue-ribbon performance as she took top honors in the 100 dash with a time of 12.59 seconds.
West Iredell was shut out of the winner’s circle, but Liz Hall gave the Warriors a runner-up finish in the triple jump. She was 3½ feet behind Cannon.
Cannon also had a second-place effort in the long jump and aided the 4x200 relay team’s win.
“Aisha is a very well-rounded athlete,” said Debbie Birchett, who coaches Mooresville’s hurdlers, jumpers and sprinters. “I’m happy to have her and a few others for the next couple years.”
