Devils get a scare, but still claim Classic crown

Mooresville’s baseball team entered last week’s Catawba County Easter Classic as the favorite and exited as the champion.

The top-seeded Blue Devils (10-2) defeated St. Stephens 6-1 in Thursday’s final.

“We played well,” Mooresville coach Jeff Burchett said. “We scored 29 runs in three games, and it was pretty good competition. We hit the ball, and that’s what we were looking for.”

Aubrey Meadows was named the tournament MVP, and Aaron Meadows and Nathan Abraham joined him on the all-tournament team.

Aubrey Meadows got the win in the championship game and continued his hot streak at the plate. Abraham got timely hits for the Blue Devils, and Aaron Meadows came in as a relief pitcher to seal a wild 13-12 win over Alexander Central in the semifinals, a game Mooresville led 13-5 after six innings.

“I made some substitutions, tried to do the right thing and give some other guys a chance to play a little bit,” Burchett said of the semifinal victory. “They relaxed a little bit, and probably the coaching staff did, too. But they gutted it out, and I think we learned from it.”
