During Mooresville’s first soccer game of the season Feb. 25 against St. Stephens, the Indians blasted in a goal 20 minutes into the game.
The Blue Devils haven’t been scored on since, going 3-0 and outscoring their opponents 16-0. That scoreless streak will get a major challenge tonight in an important early-season showdown with North Piedmont 3A foe Lake Norman (4-0). The Blue Devils boast a No. 13 ranking in the N.C. Soccer Coaches Association 3A poll, and the Wildcats are No. 6.
“I think it’s a great time of the year to play them,” Mooresville coach Steve Stith said. “We’re playing pretty well and are getting some great play from a lot of different girls.”
This will be the first true test for the Wildcats (4-0), who have scored 37 goals in four games against opponents with a combined record of 3-12-2.
“Probably, of any time of the year to get a traditionally strong team, you want to at least get them once early in the year,” Stith said. “Lake Norman traditionally keeps getting better and better and better as the season goes on. I like our chances. We’ve got a surprisingly good team this year.”
