Eight goals. Two hat tricks. End-to-end action.
Mooresville got the better end of the bargain in Wednesday’s high-scoring affair, netting four second-half goals to beat host Statesville 5-3 in a North Piedmont 3A thriller.
“If that’s the way conference is going to be, we’re in for a whirl of a season, that’s for sure,” Mooresville coach Steve Stith said.
Midfielder Tiffany Wilson scored three times and assisted once to lead Mooresville (5-1 overall, 2-1 NPC).
Courtney Smith added a pair of second-half tallies for the Blue Devils. Smith scored in the first minute of the second half to even things at 2-all and ignite Mooresville’s rally.
“We weren’t happy we were down (at the half),” Blue Devils forward Emmie Tyson said.
Wilson tacked on goals in the 57th and 62nd minutes. Tyson drove hard to the end line and crossed the ball to Wilson for the latter goal, which completed the hat trick and gave the Blue Devils a 4-2 lead. Just as she did in the eighth minute when she converted Brittney Dailey’s corner kick, Wilson headed in the ball Tyson lobbed her way.
“She always scores on her head,” Tyson said, smiling. “I knew she would be there.”
Sarah Ann Waugh tucked in a shot from 25 yards out in the 71st minute to make it 4-3, but Smith answered in the dying moments to put the game away.
Waugh, a sophomore, pocketed three goals and goalkeeper Natalie Stein made 12 saves — including three from point-blank range — for the Greyhounds (2-3-2, 2-3).
Waugh beat Mooresville goalie Alicia Danenhower with her left foot twice in the first half.
“Statesville’s got a lot of speed,” Stith said. “That No. 3, Miss Waugh, she was just awesome.”
The Greyhounds had a chance to blow the game open in the first half, but failed to capitalize on two chances in close. One player overran the ball on a cross in front of the net. Another player missed poking in an easy rebound.
“We’re there, we’re there, just got to get lucky,” Statesville coach Jennifer Husbands said. “It’s unfortunate, too, because we were doing so much right.”
