YOUTH BASEBALL: Carolina Cobras 6, Lake Norman Dodgers 5

Dodgers edged out of youth tournament

Depending on which dugout’s point of view, either Mooresville couldn’t lose or it couldn’t win in regards to final pitches being thrown in earlier this month’s Gatorade Fall NIT youth baseball tournament held in Morganton.

The way it turned out, a pair of Mooresville-based teams wound up squaring off for all the marbles in the championship game, assuring on one glove hand that one would emerge a winner but also guaranteeing on the other that one would also come up short.

In a contest befitting the closeness of their respective home bases, it was the Carolina Cobras’ 14-and-under squad that emerged as a winner, bagging a down-to-the-last-out, 6-5 edging of fellow local entry Lake Norman Dodgers in the title tilt.

The championship game in the Fall NIT served as the final fall tournament appearance for the two teams, helping set the stage for what could well be future meetings between the local players in additional seasons to come.

The Cobras prevailed in the all-Mooresville bout, after the Dodgers had paraded their way into the showdown following a 14-5 pounding of the Blue Ridge Mustangs in semifinal play.

For the runner-up Dodgers, who failed to allow a single earned run throughout their entire tournament t appearance, Charlie Sardelli and Chris Campbell stood out in the pitching department and each also joined forces with the likes of teammates Dallas Holder, Paul Blankley and Ryan Childers in pacing the troops both with the bat and the glove.

Both teams are currently in the process of securing their respective rosters in preparation for continued tournament play scheduled to get underway early next spring.
