The nucleus of last year’s West softball team, which finished 16-6, returned this season.
Seniors Kendayl Waugh and Crystal Beam, who signed with Lenoir-Rhyne and Lees-McRae, respectively, lead the Warriors, along with juniors Elizabeth Walden, Kaylyn Chapman and Pennell. Several are playing different positions this season.
Walden, who moved in from right field, occupies shortstop and is catching some. Beam, a staple behind the dish, has alternated with Walden at shortstop.
“Elizabeth catches me some over the summer when we practice, so it’s not too much different, but it is a little different,” pitcher Hannah Pennell said.
