Jordan Farrell gave Lake Norman its first lead in the bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday and Josh Hennessee closed the door on Statesville as the Wildcats prevailed 7-5.

Farrell’s single up the middle plated two runs in the sixth for a 6-5 advantage.

“We started out rough,” said Farrell, whose team trailed 5-1 after two innings. “But I knew we had a lot of at-bats left.”

The left fielder finished 2-for-3 with a walk. He recorded half of the Wildcats’ four hits. His third-inning double to the left center fence also scored a pair.

“I didn’t try to do too much, because I’ve been struggling,” Farrell said. “So I just tried to widen it up, put it in play and make something happen.”

Hennessee pitched three scoreless innings for the win. He entered in the fifth and struck out five and didn’t surrender a hit.

“He usually comes through like that most of the time,” Farrell said. “He showed a lot of confidence on the mound, a lot of poise.”

Lake Norman also got two solid innings from reliever Dylan Page, who replaced starter Tyler Lewis after the Greyhounds scored five runs on five hits in the first two frames.

“Our relief pitchers came in and kept the score 5-1 and kept us in it,” Lake Norman coach Robert Little said.

Garrett Braun and Eric Manser each had a hit for the Wildcats (6-8, 4-5 NPC), who host Northwest Cabarrus today looking to build on back-to-back conference victories.

Tanner Stroud led Statesville at the plate, going 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs. Catcher Josh Booher contributed two hits and an RBI.

Booher was saddled with the loss. He pitched the sixth inning, allowing three runs on two hits.

Brent Daino started for the Greyhounds, who lost by virtue of the mercy rule the last time these teams met. Daino struck out three and allowed two hits in 4 2/3 innings.

“We came out firing and swung it well to start with, but we really didn’t finish them,” Statesville coach Chad Parker said.

“It’s disappointing, but honestly, we’re going in the right direction. … They came to our place and beat us 15-2. We gave them a good run.”
