Former South Iredell star Tiffany Whiting helping build USC Upstate

USC Upstate freshman and former South Iredell standout Tiffany Whiting drives to the hoop during a Spartan game earlier this season. After helping lead a major turnaround at South Iredell, Whiting hopes to do the same in college.

Former South Iredell basketball star Tiffany Whiting is going through the rebuilding process.

Again.

Known in Iredell County for both her scoring prowess and being the catalyst of a major Vikings turnaround, Whiting is now facing the same challenge in college at University of South Carolina Upstate.

“I feel like this was a transition year,” said Whiting, who is home for the summer after her freshman campaign. “Last year’s schedule, there was not one Division I school. It was a big change all at once.”

Whiting helped key an incredible turnaround at South, a program that struggled for wins during her first two years of high school.

She averaged a double-double in both her junior and senior years while leading the Vikings to a Southern Piedmont 1A-2A title and two playoff berths.

“I don’t think it will be as quick of a difference like it was at South,” Whiting said. “I think it will be a slower process in college. Even though we’re going to be recruiting better girls, so are the other schools. It’s just going to take us a while.”

The Spartans took some small steps this year, though, going 5-24 overall in their first season as a Division I program.

There were several flashes of promise, including a strong showing against ACC opponent Wake Forest and a one-point loss to conference champion Jacksonville.
Whiting played a major role in both those games.

With several of her friends in attendance, she bombed three 3-pointers and scored 11 points against the Deacons.

Her 12-point effort against Jacksonville nearly led to a huge Upstate upset.

“That was probably my best game,” Whiting said. “Jacksonville was really good. I put the first points on the board and went to my left that game.”

As a freshman under head coach Tammy George, Whiting played in all 29 games and started 22 of them.

She finished the year averaging 5.3 points per game and, despite being one of the smaller players on the team, led the squad in rebounding in three separate games.

“I felt like I rebounded well,” Whiting said. “To not be able to jump that high, and to not be as strong as other players, I thought I did decent.”

One of the biggest differences for Whiting at the college level was the heavy use of halfcourt sets.

Whiting had the green light every time she touched the ball at South Iredell. This year, the focus turned more toward setting up the offense and running set plays.
“In high school, it was so easy for me to just score,” Whiting said. “I didn’t even have to look at coach (Bradley) Gabriel. Now I feel like every time I get the ball, I have to look at the coaches to see if I can shoot. It’s not a bad thing, it’s just different.”

USC Upstate has already inked five players to join the team next season.

And in losing only one senior — who walked-on to provide depth — Whiting knows the prospect of a turnaround is there.

“I felt like it was a special first year for me,” Whiting said. “It was good and very interesting. I started my first game and I got plenty of playing time. I can’t say that’s in the box for next year, but it was good to actually experience it and know what I have to work for over the summer.”
