Michael Krueger didn’t stray from his aggressive approach early in Friday’s game, and it paid off in a big way.
Krueger belted a one-out grand slam in the second inning to key West Iredell’s 10-6 North Piedmont 3A victory over surging Lake Norman.
Wildcats pitcher Garrett Braun struck out Krueger on three pitches in his first at-bat. Krueger took a cut at the first two pitches he saw in the second. The latter made solid contact and sent the ball sailing over the 350-foot marker in center field.
“I swung at every single pitch before then,” Krueger said. “I figured if I kept on swinging, I’d get a big hit.”
This one cleared the bases to give West a 6-2 lead.
It was part of a huge second inning for the Warriors. They sent 13 batters to the plate and scored nine runs.
Braun struggled to throw strikes in the second, and the senior only lasted 1 2-3 innings. But there were a couple of errors behind him, too, during West’s onslaught.
“We’re not a very good team defensively,” Lake Norman coach Robert Little said. “Plain and simple.”
West did its damage on three hits. None were bigger than Krueger’s towering drive.
“I was just trying to get a hit,” Krueger said. “I knew we just needed a couple runs to get ahead. We haven’t really come through at the right time, so it’s nice for that to happen for a change.”
Brian Romito threw six strong innings for the win. He shook off a three-hit first inning — which included a two-run homer by Shane Denton — to strike out five and surrender two hits over the next five innings.
“He’s a pretty heady guy,” West coach Buck Gatton said. “He kept the ball down in the zone and did a good job.
“I’m proud for our kids and happy we got a win.”
The loss snapped a modest three-game conference win streak for the Wildcats (7-9, 5-6 NPC), who scored four runs on three hits in the top of the seventh before West sealed the deal. Tyler Lewis and Joe Faist both had RBI doubles during the failed comeback bid.
Derek Rose drove in two runs for the Warriors (5-10, 2-8 NPC), who split the season series with Lake Norman.
