Free throw competition sign-ups end Friday
Openings in all the various age and gender divisions for the inaugural Mooresville Recreation Department’s Free Throw Challenge remain as the final days of the event’s pre-registration period arrive. All entries, able to do so absolutely free of charge, are able to sign up to participate through Friday.
The contest itself, made possible by a few primary sponsors, will take place beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday. All of the shots will be taken in the gym in the East Mooresville Intermediate School.
There is no fee to attend, but all doing so much register in advance. A limited number of participants will be fielded in each age group.
As of early this week, only a few spots remain in a number of the age and gender divisions. All still wishing to participate are encouraged to make those intentions known by signing up in advance.
Those showing up on the day of the event and wishing to participate will be allowed to do so only if there are spots available in the various divisions.
Winners will be recognized in all the age and gender divisions. Winners will have the choice of having their next registration fee for any MRD youth league season paid in full or accept a gift certificate of equivalent value.
Divisions to be featured included girls Minor, Midget and Junior, and boys Minor, Midget, Junior and Senior. Age restrictions follow the same as those in place within each league as set by the governing MRD.
In addition to those classifications, an Open division will also be held. It is open to any and all interested participants regardless of age and gender. Those winners will be the recipients of a gift certificate.
All wishing to participate are urged to arrive at the site of the competition no later than 10 a.m. The facility’s gym monitor will be on the premises beginning at 9:30 a.m. All wishing to take ample number of warm-shots are welcome to do so beginning then.
The Challenge is being made possible courtesy of the combined efforts of a trio of area sponsors. They included Lake Norman Lending Group/Neil Jackson, The Meadows Family, and Patty Bender Team Keller Williams Realty.
The sponsors are covering all costs of the winners’ registration fees, gift certificates and commemorative Free Throw Challenge T-shirts that will be presented to all participants registering in advance.
Format for the competition will take place in a round-by-round elimination process. The winner of each age class will be rewarded accordingly with a certificate acknowledging the feat as well.
All shots will be made from corresponding distances and using the same size basketballs as are used within the various age divisions during the course of regular MRD youth league play. Those participants in the Open division will use regulation size basketballs for the female and male participants, respectively.
All winners will also gather for a group photo that will be placed in the newspaper for publication.

All event volunteers serving as scorekeepers will also receive complementary T-shirts.
