Gator Club make strong showing at tournament
For baby steps, the Mooresville-based Gator Wrestling Club keeps making some major strides on the competitive mat.
The youth wrestlers, fresh off an earlier impressive outing earlier this month, continued to maintain a steady showing during participation in this past weekend’s Amateur Athletic Union Falcon Flight Novice Wrestling Tournament held at nearby East Lincoln Middle School in Denver.
Then and there, a host of the Gators in a number of age divisions brought back with them numerous medals, including a total of six gold medals rewarded to respective weight class winners.
Gators competed in several divisions, including Tot, Bantam, Midget and Schoolboy, and members of the outfit notched at least one gold medal accounting for a first-place finish within each.
It proved to be quite a coming out party indeed for the local program that used the affair to mark it debut in AAU competition.
In the Tot Division, Mooresville’s Keyshaun Black grappled his way to a first-place finish in his 45-pound clash.
In the Bantam Division, the duo of Todd Norman at 50 pounds and Mikey Goins at 55 pounds both emerged as the cream of their respective crops courtesy of the winning of gold medals.
In the Midget Division, there was no denying the pair consisting of Gators Eli Freeze at 50 pounds and club mate Cameron Molesky at 80 pounds, as each of them beat all contenders to capture the gold.
And in the oldest Schoolboy Division, no other in his 70-pound class did it better than did the Gators’ Jamie Wright, who proved it by earning his division’s gold.
Also for the Gators, they accounted for a number of silver and bronze medals to also show for their weekend’s effort.
In the Bantam Division, silver medals awarded to runners-up were bestowed upon club members A’lonte Beatty at 60 pounds, and Tyson Stevenson at 85 pounds.
In the Schoolboy Division, silvers were claimed by Ryan Gabriel at 115 pounds, Tyler Gabriel at 119 pounds, and Tyler Wood at 130 pounds.
Also in the Schoolboy class, Kyle Graves won his 105-pound class’ bronze medal, while Jeffrey McCarter at 115 pounds was his division’s third-place finisher.
During the team’s stay, it wound up winning 30 of 42 matches, with 20 of those verdicts being rendered by pins.
“I was very pleased with the effort,” boasted Josh Sherrill, the Gators’ head coach, “and the dedication of the wrestlers to produce such great results. We’re looking forward to getting back on the mat and prepare for our biggest tournament of the season.”
Boosted by the pair of strong showings so far this season, the Gators Wrestling Club will try and continue to follow suit when being in the field for the AAU State Championship taking place this weekend on the campus of Appalachian State University in Boone.
