Count West Iredell baseball coach Buck Gatton as one of those who is looking forward to state-wide conference realignment in 2009.
Following the additions of East Rowan and South Rowan this season, the North Piedmont 3A now consists of 10 teams. Each team plays the other nine twice, with the top six qualifying for the state playoffs. The N.C. High School Athletic Association permits a maximum of 24 games during the regular season.
“Playing 18 conference games is too many, no matter what,” Gatton said. “You’d like to have some nonconference games where you could look at some different players, get a little different look, get a little different feel, and get some guys some experience. With 18 conference games, you can’t really afford to do that.”
Especially in the highly competitive NPC, which has had a representative in the 3A state championship twice the previous four years. West Rowan and Northwest Cabarrus were state runners-up in 2004and ’05, respectively.
