Statesville’s boys golf team moved into a tie for fourth place in the North Piedmont 3A standings Monday when it picked up three strokes on Northwest Cabarrus at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis.
“That was their goal,” coach Ted Crowley said. “Now it’s, ‘Let’s see if we can get to No. 3 by the time we get to our place.’ ”
The Greyhounds host an NPC match April 17 at Statesville Country Club.
Sophomore John Lewis carded a 3-over-par round of 38 on Monday to tie for third. Luke Gillis also played well at Irish Creek. The senior fired a career-low 41.
Others have also shined for the Greyhounds this season. Jimmy Sappenfield has a pair of 39s to his name. In March, Ben Morrison finished fifth in his flight during the Palmetto High School Golf Championships in Myrtle Beach, S.C., thanks to rounds of 82 and 83, respectively, at The Tradition and Crown Park.
