Though the scent of an upset was in the air, West Rowan’s ground game proved too much for Statesville Greyhounds on Friday.

After jumping out to an early 17-0 lead, the Greyhounds gave up an unanswered 26 points, losing 26-17.

Falcons sophomore running back K.P. Parks was instrumental in West Rowan’s attack. He rushed for 240 yards on 37 carries and scored two touchdowns.

“He’s a heck of a running back,” Statesville head coach Randall Gusler said.

Though Parks controlled the game, Statesville’s bend-don’t-break defense kept the contest close in the first half.

The Greyhounds were first on the board when senior William Marion scored on a 65-yard punt return for touchdown.

On the following West Rowan drive, Statesville senior Jeremy Chambers intercepted a Brantley Horton pass.

The interception set up a 19-yard pass by junior T.J. McCombs to Marion for a touchdown.

West Rowan (5-0 overall, 3-1 North Piedmont 3A) coughed up the ball on the first play of its following drive to set up a 37-yard field goal by Jimmy Sappenfield and the 17-0 Greyhounds lead.

The Falcons answered with an 11-play drive, which was capped with a 20-yard touchdown run by Parks.

Statesville (3-2 overall, 2-1 NPC) went into the locker room ahead 17-6.

“The difference between the first and second half was that we turned the ball over in the second half,” Gusler said.

Though the second half began like the first for Statesville, a fumbled snap changed the momentum.

With nearly three minutes to go in the third quarter and Statesville backed up to its 3-yard line, a snap over McCombs’ head was recovered in the Greyhounds’ end zone. The recovered fumble slimmed Statesville’s lead to four.

Late in the third quarter, the Falcons marched 40 yards in three plays — all behind Parks — to capture a 19-17 lead.

West Rowan’s final score came on senior fullback Alec Daye’s 2-yard run.
