Hickory classic sets record attendance

HICKORY - Several high-profile players, a special 9/11 ceremony and gorgeous weekend weather spurred the Greater Hickory Classic to record attendance last week.

More than 101,000 people converged on Rock Barn Golf & Spa for the annual Champions Tour golf tournament, which features seven days of events. The previous record was more than 90,000.

Jim Correll, executive director of the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn presented by Kia Motors, said several factors played a part in the impressive crowds.
Most importantly, professionals participating for the first time included the popular Fred Funk along with past major tournament winners Nick Price and Jeff Sluman.

“The player field was the strongest in our history,” Correll said.

Also new this year was a 9/11 remembrance ceremony held Tuesday before the Dale Jarrett Shootout. More than 15,000 people attended Tuesday’s events, which also shattered the previous record.

“Those who came and saw the event was so moved and energized by that. I think it catapulted us for the week,” Correll said.

Finally, sunny skies and reasonable weather Saturday and Sunday contributed to the tourney’s best weekend attendance. Scorching heat hampered attendance in 2004 when the tournament was held in mid-August. Rains dampened crowds the following year.

Rain did cancel play early Friday, which lowered typical attendance. But the weekend more than made up for the off day, Correll said.

He expects the tournament to again contribute more than $100,000 to local charities. Correll won’t know final figures for some time.

Correll said preparations have begun for the 2008 contest.

The tournament should benefit from several new faces.

Mark O’Meara will become eligible, as will Europeans and former Masters champions Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam.

The tournament will also enjoy a favorable schedule. Set for Sept. 15 to 21, the tourney falls between an off-week on tour and the SAS tournament in Raleigh.

Attendance figures for the 2007 Greater Hickory Classic:
• Monday - 2,710
• Tuesday - 15,740
• Wednesday - 8,360
• Thursday - 7,740
• Friday - 9,330
• Saturday - 27,660
• Sunday - 29,950
Total for week: 101,490
