Statesville’s boys track and field team finished second to Mooresville in the North Piedmont 3A last year. Coach Kenny Wilkins hopes to challenge the defending 3A state champion this season, but he knows it won’t be easy.

“I think we have some competition for (Mooresville) in the jumps,” Wilkins said. “It’s the distance events where they rack up all those points.”

Statesville doesn’t boast the same depth in the distance events, but Matt Smith leads the Greyhounds’ charge. He runs the mile- and two-mile races.

Greg Chambers and former South Iredell Viking William Marion are Statesville’s speedsters.

Dominique Nichols is one of the team’s top athletes in field events.
