County teams also won both distinctions in boys swimming. Lake Norman’s Austin Johnson was named swimmer of the year after winning a 3A state title for the second straight season. Gregg Whitson, who led West Iredell to a surprising season, was named coach of the year.
Statesville’s Shannon Hayes, who had a pair of top-three finishes in the NPC championships in January, was named girls swimmer of the year.
First-year Mooresville wrestling coach Ben Watson, who led the Blue Devils to their second straight undefeated conference season, was named coach of the year.
