Iredell tennis players in contention for state titles

Lake Norman’s Trey McKee and Statesville’s doubles team of Luke Gillis and Tripp Hawkins are still in the running for state championships.
With two wins each Friday in the 3A state championships at Burlington Tennis Center, both McKee and the Gillis-Hawkins pair are in the state semifinals.
McKee advanced with a win over East Regional champion Blake Vail of Pikeville Aycock in the first round, holding on for a 6-2, 3-6 7-6 (2) win in a match that lasted more than three-and-a-half hours. McKee then toppled Midwest Regional runner-up Charles Wolbers of Sun Valley in the second round.
The junior, the No. 4 seed from the West Region, will face West champion Luke Synn of Hickory today in the semis.
Gillis and Hawkins dominated Pikeville Aycock’s Ben Evans and Dylan Quinn 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, then rolled Charlotte Catholic’s Sean Huber and Michael Klochany 6-1, 6-0 in the second round. The pair will meet Charlotte Catholic’s Michael Huber and David Anderson today in the semifinals.
McKee’s Lake Norman classmate Andrew McKinnon won easily in the first round, beating Eastern Wayne’s Drew Jackson 6-1, 6-1. But McKinnon was forced to retire in his second round match while trailing Charlotte Catholic’s Daniel Tobben 1-6, 6-4, 3-0.
