It takes two to take winter classic
Troutman resident jerry Godfrey was one glad fisherman to have fellow resident Roger Morrow as n accompanying boatmate during the course of late last month’s annual Lake Norman Striper Swipers Winter Classic.
It was Morrow’s catch of the event’s single largest striper from Lake Norman that enabled the crew to cash in on equal shares of the yearly attraction’s top cash prize that closed in on the $1,800 mark.
With Morrow the one given credit for hooking the lunker 6.87-pound prize that emerged as the largest of all such keepers caught during the daylong affair, it earned the winning team a grand cash prize payoff of $1,760.
It was the largest of all the cash awards presented to wining teams in the affair that attracted a total of 44 boats and involved 99 anglers. Of the entries, 24 of the teams hauled keeper stripers to the official weigh-in scales.
The winning fish in the big fish event topped the runner-up catch weighing in at 6.67 pounds that was landed by the team made up of Lincoln County anglers Wes Gilmore and Dean Rhyne.
Among those placing in the top five, Mooresville’s Sam “Rawhide” Newman checked in fifth with another of the event’s catches that topped the six-pound mark on the scales at the event’s headquarters in the Pinnacle Point Public Access Area.
As it turned out, in a separate competition, the duo consisting of Lincoln County’s Anthony Johnson and the aptly-named Shane Reel cashed in on another bonus prize of $400 for bringing the largest catfish to the weigh-n site as well. That winning lunker tipped the weigh-in scales at 24.85 pounds.
Following another successful edition of the club’s Winter Classic that was only slightly hampered by lower than expected temperatures, the Lake Norman Striper Swipers are also making place for their annual Spring Classic that will take place in April.
