After lining a shot to left field that took an awkward bounce and rolled to the wall, North Iredell’s Tyler Jordan let out an audible groan when coach Matthew Poole held him at third base.

“I wanted to keep rolling,” Jordan said with a grin.

He got his chance seconds later as an error on a relay throw allowed him to score. That capped a six-run second inning, and Jordan made a brilliant defensive play with two outs in the seventh inning to seal North’s 10-7 win over South Iredell on Monday.

Trailing 10-4 with two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh, Parker Carranco blasted a bases-clearing triple to make the score 10-7. Dillon Harris followed with what looked like a clean shot up the middle before Jordan made a diving stop, rolled over and fired the ball to first for the final out.

“I looked at the catcher and saw it was a fastball, so I knew there was a chance of me getting it,” Jordan said. “I got a good jump.”

Junior Brett Earnest picked up the win for North (3-0). He allowed three hits in four innings and recorded two strikeouts.

“He looked good,” Poole said. “He has a good body, we just have to get him a little bit stronger so he can last a little bit longer.”

Rowdy Harris and Carranco, who took the loss for South, each had three RBIs.

Harris drilled a 3-2 pitch for a three-run homer in the fifth inning that made the score 7-4, but South couldn’t recover from an error-filled second inning.

“We’ve been spotting everybody runs early,” South coach Trey Ramsey said. “That’s been killing us. Our kids have a lot of battle in them, but when you spot someone five or six runs early, it’s hard to win.”

The turning point that inning came with Chris Bustle at the plate and Marcus Ferguson on second with no outs.

Ferguson broke for third and Bustle smacked a grounder to second base. The throw to first baseman Nick Matlock was high, which sent Bustle to second and Ferguson home.

“We have one of our better arms in the field at first base,” Ramsey said. “If he catches the ball, comes down on the bag and throws it to home, we get a double play. Things like that are just momentum changers.”
