When pushed for the first time this season, Lake Norman pushed back.

Sarah Tang slipped in a goal from 14 yards out with less than two minutes remaining and the previously unchallenged Wildcats prevailed with a 1-0 road victory Tuesday over Mooresville.

Working in space, Tang pushed the ball through Mooresville’s defense, collected it herself and buried a perfectly placed shot just inside the far post.

“To tell you the truth, I don’t really remember what happened,” Tang said with a laugh. “It happened so fast.”

Overtime appeared to be a certainty before Tang ended it.

Blue Devils keeper Alicia Danenhower finished with 11 saves, routinely turning away the Wildcats, and Lake Norman’s defense held Mooresville to six shots.

“It was a hard-fought game by two great teams,” Lake Norman coach Jon Mertes said. “We got a little lucky at the end. I’m not really pleased with how we performed between the 18s, but Mooresville played a great game.”

The Blue Devils had two nice looks on goal in the first half, but were turned away by a spectacular save and a penalty.

Senior Tiffany Wilson worked her way free for a header that looked like a sure goal before Lake Norman keeper Corrine Roberts got in the way.

Roberts finished with four saves after coming in for Mollie Zimmer, who left in the first half after taking a cleat to the face while sliding for a ball.

“That was a beautiful save,” Mertes said of Roberts. “She did a great job.

“Mollie took a cleat to the eye and will probably have to have a couple of stitches. But you know, it’s a 50-50 ball, it happens in soccer.”

Wilson buried another header minutes later that was nullified after the referee — making the correct call, Mooresville coach Steve Stith said — whistled the Blue Devils for a handball.

With the win, Lake Norman improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in North Piedmont 3A play while Mooresville dropped to 4-1 and 1-1.

“I think they were the more aggressive team, but we have a lot to be proud of,” Stith said. “We have some guts. I think we earned some respect.”
