Lake Norman rallies to keep playoff hopes aliveLake Norman is still alive in the playoff race. Trailing by one run with two outs in the seventh inning and its season on the line, the Wildcats clawed their way to a dramatic 5-4 win over North Iredell on Friday in a must-win game. “A loss here and we would have been done,” Wildcats coach Robert Little said. “I’m glad we won for these seniors.” Thanks to a clutch hit, smart baserunning and a bit of luck, Lake Norman (10-13 overall, 7-10 North Piedmont 3A) still has a shot at qualifying for the 3A playoffs. With Eric Manser on first base with two outs and a full count in the bottom of the seventh inning, Lake Norman’s Jordan Farrell drew a walk off North pitcher Aaron Johnson. Nick Keith followed with a groundball that squirted through the infield on an error, allowing Manser to score and Farrell to advance to third. Johnson hurled a pitch the following at-bat that hit the dirt and got by catcher Tyler Christenberry, causing Farrell to break for home. Christenberry located the ball and his throw to Johnson at the plate beat Farrell, but the ball popped out of Johnson’s glove. “When I got to third base, my coach told me, ‘If it’s in the dirt, I want you to score,’ ” Farrell said. “When I slid in to home, I think I knocked the ball out of (Johnson’s) glove.” Johnson was the hard-luck loser after a gritty, 110-pitch performance. He struck out seven batters and allowed five runs, just two earned. A win Friday would have almost certainly clinched a playoff spot for North (9-10 overall, 7-9 NPC), which now probably needs to win Monday against South Rowan to claim a playoff spot. “It’s tough, but it’s baseball,” North coach Matthew Poole said. “That groundball looks like a routine play, but it’s not. That ball was low and hugging the ground, and you can’t really read the hop.” Lake Norman pitcher Josh Hennessee earned the win in a relief appearance, holding North’s offense at bay over the final two innings. He relieved sophomore Scottie Williams, who started in place of Nick Lomascolo, who was scratched after being late for practice. “That says a lot about a sophomore, to come in and pitch like that,” Little said.
