Wildcat wrestlers shine in off-season

There appears to be no such thing as an off-season for Lake Norman High’s wrestling programs. The results prove it.

Out of season for quite a while, it has not resulted in being out of action as a host of Wildcats – past and present – continue to shine.

Earlier this spring, current freshman Harrison Honeycutt earned the first ever All-American status for a Wildcats wrestler courtesy of his top-four finish within his 189-pound class during the Freshman Nationals held at Virginia Beach.

Honeycutt, a fifth-place finisher within his weight division during the course of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A class wrestling championships that was the highest placement for a first-year entry in that division, was one of just two prep grapplers from North Carolina to merit the A-A distinction during the affair. It marked the first time that a wrestler from Lake Norman earned such national acclaim.

It wound up being just the tip of the iceberg as far as ongoing success within the Wildcats wrestling program is concerned.

Earlier this month, as many as 11 Wildcats participated in the annual Tar Heel Classic seeking to qualify for the North Carolina National Team. As it turned out, several of the LNHS entries were successful in doing just that.

Honeycutt was among those making the difficult cut, claiming the Cadet Division of his 189-pound class’ gold to nail down such a coveted assignment. He wasn’t by his lonesome is making such an impression as he captured both the Freestyle and Greco style championships.

Rising freshman Will Greene prevailed in his Schoolboy Division’s 136-pound class, while Hunter Dowless emerged as the kingpin of his Cadet Division’s 171-pound classification. Josh Smith, at Cadet Division’s 16-pound class, Aaron Smith at the Junior Division’s 140-pound class, and Danny Jones in the Junior Division’s 171-pound class each also grappled their way to the top to also merit team qualification.

In addition to Honeycutt, Josh Smith and Greene each also won both the Freestyle and Greco crowns.

Lake Norman’s Jon Burnette, Alex Henry, Billy Moore, Jeffrey Webster and Jacob McNeill rounded out the program’s representatives in the event.

The next chance to qualify for the state’s National Team will be during the course of the NCUSU Freestyle and Greco Roman Championships, on tap to take place May 2-3 in Winston Salem.
