Led by pole-vaulting crew, Hounds place fifth in NPC championships
By Brian Meadows
Statesville’s boys and girls both finished fifth Wednesday at the North Piedmont 3A track and field championships.
As expected, the Greyhounds dominated the pole-vaulting competition. Jordan Daywalt and Joni Henderson gave the girls a 1-2 finish, with Daywalt winning at 11 feet, 6 inches.
Nick Martin sprang 12-6 to win the boys pole vault.
Savion Nichols and Sam Hughes, Martin’s teammates, were third and fourth in the event, respectively.
Statesville’s Kelli Smyre (second, 300-meter hurdles), William Marion (third, high jump) and Curtis Nesbit (third, 110 hurdles) rounded out the Greyhounds’ other top-five individual finishes. The Greyhounds’ 4x100 girls relay squad added a second-place finish of its own.
