Lake Norman High’s volleyball team improved steadily the last few seasons, and now the Wildcats will attempt to build on their progress under new leadership.
The school named Karen Poulin its next volleyball coach.
A Connecticut native who guided Catawba Valley Community College to prominence in 2007, Poulin replaces Ryan Garno. He coached Lake Norman since 2002, when the school opened its doors.
“We are very pleased to add Coach Poulin to our staff,” Lake Norman athletics director Steve Rankin said. “She has high school, (Junior Olympic volleyball) and college level experience. Of all applicants we interviewed, she was our No. 1 choice for the job.”
With Poulin at the helm last year, CVCC enjoyed an undefeated regular season in conference play, won regional and district championships and qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III national tournament. The Buccaneers finished eighth in the country.
Poulin, who also coaches at Race City Volleyball Club, played her high school and college volleyball in Connecticut.
The 37-year-old wife and mother of four turned down offers to coach at West Virginia Wesleyan and Southern Vermont in favor of filling the Lake Norman vacancy. She said she didn’t want to uproot her family.
“Our support is here,” said Poulin, who lives in Mooresville. “I have really good friends and neighbors who have been helpful with watching the kids or picking them up.”
She and new assistant coach Meggie Martin inherit a Lake Norman team coming off its best season in program history.
The Wildcats qualified for the 3A playoffs for the second straight year and finished 16-9 after a first-round loss to state semifinalist Enka. Lake Norman also placed third in the 10-team North Piedmont Conference, behind only co-champions West Iredell — the state runner-up — and North Iredell.
Poulin believes she can help Lake Norman take the next step.
“I’m very passionate about what I do,” she said. “I’m good at what I do, and I think that confidence and that passion translates to the student-athletes well.”
Poulin said she would hold open gym from 6-8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday for prospective players. “Meet the Coach” night is July 28 following an open gym, which begins at 6 p.m. Tryouts will be Aug. 4-8.
GWILT HONORED
Former Lake Norman soccer standout Matt Gwilt was named North Carolina’s Most Valuable Player of the Clash of the Carolinas held Saturday at Blackburn Stadium in Daniel Island, S.C.
The contest, which pits the top recent graduates from North Carolina against their South Carolina counterparts, ended in a 0-0 draw.
Gwilt anchored a North Carolina defense that made life easy on its goalkeeper, Vasili Dimopoulos, who only had to make one save.
North Carolina registered eight shots on goal, but was unable to boot one past Greg DeMare, South Carolina’s MVP.
Gwilt, who helped Lake Norman claim back-to-back 3A state titles, will compete in Tuesday’s N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star game. Kickoff is slated for 9 p.m. at UNC Greensboro Soccer Stadium.
ANOTHER KING TO ROLL WITH TIDE
Lake Norman’s Tia King has committed to Alabama and will play soccer alongside her sister Kelly, who, as a freshman last season, scored two goals and assisted two more for the Crimson Tide.
King moved to Mississippi after her sophomore year, in which the midfielder was named all-county. She transferred back to Lake Norman for her senior year.
“I’m very excited,” King said. “Alabama is getting so big with soccer right now.”
Todd Bramble, who coached Clemson the last seven seasons, replaces longtime Crimson Tide coach Don Staley in 2008. Staley resigned after a 9-10-1 mark in 2007.
King said she chose Alabama over Auburn, Ole Miss, UNC Charlotte and UNC Greensboro.
