Though holding the numbers advantage, Mooresville’s Jamie and David Munari wound up feeling a tad bit outnumbered during the final Friday Night Fishin’ Friends event.
One of a host of entries competing in the finale out if Midway Marina and used to draw the circuit’s 19-week schedule to a close, the all-in-the-family Manuri crew just missed bagging both the heaviest amount of Lake Norman bass overall and accounting for the single largest catch overall to finish a close second on both regards.
As it turned out, an entry flying solo in the traditional team event emerged as the winner to sweep the final event’s top accolades, denying the Mooresville couple that coveted distinction.
For the late-night into early-morning effort, Jamie and David Munari boated a limit of five fish from Lake Norman that tipped the official weigh-in scales at 14.43 pounds. As it turned out, that total was just less than a full pound shy of at least tying for the event’s heaviest amount.
Lincolnton’s Matt Haywood, fishing on his own, latched on to his full five-fish limit that weighed in at 15.03 pounds.
Adding additional insult to that injury, the Munaris also just missed logging in with the night’s largest fish that carried an additional cash bonus. The largest lunker in the runner-up duo’s bag checked in at 4.44 pounds, just missing the winning tally of first-place finishing Haywood’s winner that tipped the scales at 4.51 pounds.
In placing second, the Munaris wound up leading all immediate Mooresville area entries in the affair that took place out of Midway, just west of Mooresville off N.C. Highway 150. The tournament took place between midnight and final weigh-ins were held around 7 a.m.
The Munaris more than merited their right to reach the finale, having won once previously during the course of the season series’ 18-week regulation phase. All participants that competed in at least half of the tour stops during the regular season merited the right to also appear in the finale.
As was the case during all regulation events, the top three teams and the entry accounting for the largest single fish were all awarded for their efforts with cash awards.
In placing third in the finale, the team of Lincolnton’s Larry Houser and Tracy Story brought a bag of fish weighing in at 12.38 pounds to account for the final placing squad.
The event was used to conclude the FNFF tour schedule for this late spring and summer. Next year’s agenda gets cranking in early April.
