Madness approaches in form of free throw contest

By Larry Sullivan

Mooresville’s own miniaturized version of March Madness remains firmly in place just at the end of the free throw lane, literally.

Registration remains ongoing and vacancies are still in place in each of the age divisions for the scheduled Free Throw Challenge tabled to take place early next month.

The event, able to take place under strong local sponsorship, will be held March 8, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., in the gym in the East Mooresville Intermediate School. Sign-ups for participants, who must register in advance, is now in progress through the Mooresville Recreation Department.

The inaugural Challenge is being held courtesy of primary sponsorships provided by The Patty Bender Team Keller Williams Realty, Lake Norman Lending Group/Neil Jackson, and The Meadows Family.

There is no fee to register, but all wishing to participate must sign-up to compete. Registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. A limited number of participants will be allowed in each age division.

The competition will be divided into a number of divisions based on age and gender. Groups of players will be those in a girls Minor, Midget and Junior group, as well as in boys Minor, Midget, Junior and Senior sets.

Ages will be the same as those defined by the MRD guidelines for players in each age class. All divisions will shoot the free throws from the same distance and using the same size basketball as used during respective league play.

All emerging as winners of the event that will be held in a round-by-round elimination format will be rewarded by having their next MRD registration fee of $30 paid or full or have the choice of receiving an equivalent prize of the same value.

In addition to the youth divisions, an Open class will also be held for any and all of any age and/or gender to compete. That winner, too, will be rewarded accordingly.

As for the youth divisions, only those presently enrolled in the MRD youth basketball programs are eligible to compete. They must provide proof of league enrollment when registering.

Format for the competition will follow a round-by-round elimination process. All players in each age group will be allowed the same number of shots within each round until a winner emerges outright.

Each of the divisions is limited to the first 20 participants signing up to participate. Deadline to enter is March 7, one day prior to the event. All missing the deadline but still wishing to participate may show up the day of the event but run the risk of having the various age divisions filled to capacity.

According to MRD officials, sign-ups are taking place as expected, and some of the divisions are near capacity crowds.

All signing up on or before the deadline will also receive official Free Throw Challenge T-shirts that will be theirs to keep.

More information on the contest can be obtained by contacting the following outlets: MRD athletic office at 704-663-7026; Patty Bender Team Keller Williams Realty at 704-506-1611; Lake Norman Lending/Neil Jackson at 704-664-2482; or The Meadows Family at 704-664-5041.
