McReynolds to host golf tourney again

Mooresville’s Larry McReynolds spent time during the past year busily thumbing his way through a favorite joke book, finding suitable anecdotes he could use while hosting his Larry McReynolds Celebrity Golf Tournament.

McReynolds, who makes it a point to try and welcome all in the field personally, was once again up to his old tricks.

A long list of items up for grabs in the event’s auction of NASCAR and other sports-related memorabilia items were confirmed for the pre-play tee party that was held a day before the grand event itself earlier this summer.

Two days were set aside late last month to make the attraction such an appealing event on the local golfing and activity schedule. Mallard Head County Club, off Brawley School Road, once again opened its 18-hole public spread for the tournament play, it taking place a day after nearby The Point Lake and Club at the tail end of Brawley School Road played host to the party and auction..

As has been the case during each of the previous affairs, McReynolds served as a host in more than just lending his name to the title. He again planned to be in place in person on a select hole to joke with players, exchange stories, pose for photographs, provide an autograph and perhaps even hit a golf shot or two.
In the past, he has selected the par-three 17th hole as his personal stomping ground, posing for photos, offering greeting and appreciation and, in most cases, attempting to get a laugh or two from those around him.

This late summer event marked the seventh annual playing of the event that this year will be used to raise funds to benefit the Special Olympics of North Carolina and the Motor Racing Outreach program.

Tournament highlights included the presence of current and former NASCAR Nextel Cup Series drivers, Busch Grand National Series drivers, Craftsman Truck Series pilots, sports celebrities, Fox Sport television and radio personalities, and additional special guests. Also, live remote broadcasts from local and national radio and TV stations and networks will also be on site.

The fourth annual tee party and auction was to be used to officially kick off the festivities. It took place at The Point . During that festive evening’s scheduled, a full-catered and multi-course dinner was followed by the auction, during which too many items to list will be available to the one with the highest bid.

The following day, the golf took place, it doing so at Mallard Head. With play beginning with a shotgun start for the field, lunch followed play, after which all awards will also be presented.

Cost of participating depended on level of participation. Rates ranged from $7,500 for those wishing to serve as a title sponsor to a mere $75 per person to attend the party and auction only. Other rates were also available depending on level of interest to participate.

Play in the event once again took the shape of a captain’s choice format, with every team in the field including a celebrity of some sort on the roster. Under the playing procedure, each member of a team hits each shot from the best result of each previous shot. Low scores are usually the norm rather than the exception.

In addition to team stroke competition, with scores able to be enhanced courtesy of mulligans – the equivalent of extra shots – and string used to help shorten the length of putts to the hole, on-course events were also conducted in the form of closest-to-the-pin contests on each of the host course’s par-three holes and a long drive challenge on another selection hole.

As in the past, the main winners from the affair wound up being the charitable beneficiaries.

Special Olympics of North Carolina provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in sharing of gifts, skills and friendship.

Motor Racing Outreach, founded in 1988, is a non-profit, Christian ministry which serves the motor racing community, drivers and riders, owners, crew members and their families, and motor sports fans through at-the-track chapels, programs for children and adults, race shop and home Bible studies, counseling and trauma response.

Plans are already underway regarding the scheduled eighth annual event that will take place under the same guidelines late next summer as well.
