Midget Football League results

Mooresville Midget Football League gains on the Southland Football League came at the expense of MMFL last weekend.

Engaging in games played in the Mooresville Stadium, all wins posted by the local organization came against teams also aligned within the same outfit to account for a full day’s play.

As a result, within the Pee Wee Division, the Cougars eked out a narrow, 22-20 overtime decision over the Hornets, and the Terminators tripled up the Warriors, 18-6, while in the Midget Division ranks, the Terminators silenced the Warriors 22-0, and the Hornets took over first-place honors outright with a grinding, 8-0 nipping of the Cougars

Pee Wee Division

Terminators 18, Warriors 6
For the Terminators, Footie Black was on the ball, rushing for 184 yards in 12 carries and accounting for three touchdowns. Fullback Sion Harrington ran three times for 16 yards, while quarterback Tyson Stephenson called his own number four times for 21 yards.

Defensively, Jace Donaldson racked up five tackles, while Harrington and L.J. Heppner each accumulated a pair of sacks among their three and two tackles, respectively.

For the Warriors, quarterback Kellen Hull connected with Noah Allen for the score. Allen’s 48 yards topped the rushing attack.

Defensively, Conner Heller and Zac Alford led the Warriors in tackles.

Cougars 22, Hornets 20 (OT)
Extended played was required before a winner emerged, with the Cougars getting in the last lick to prevail

For the Cougars, Cameron Dunlap rushed for 88 yards and a pair of touchdowns and also connected on a 74-yard aerial strike to Demetrius Spury for another tally. Blockers Austin Jordon and Trevor Slack cleared the path for Zach Parham and Lewis Thomas to convert critical point-after carries that proved to be the difference in the game.

Defensively, J.R. Speaks, Riley Brisendine, Blake Gooden, Byran Izzo, and Matt Koehler all accounted for multiple tackles, while assists also coming from Ja’Lon Colston and Nathan Whitney.

For the Hornets, Donshell Jetton scored all of the TDs on runs of 60, 40 and 15 yards. The difference came when the Hornets failed to convert their point-after try following the overtime score. Quarterack Jarrett Burris teamed with Jaleel Phifer, and Kenneth Nusser to also provide the offensive spark.

On defense, Chandler Begle, Andrew Ratchford, Dustin Tyler, Walker Burt, Nick McNeely, and Chase Popple paced the charge with tackles. Jetton and Popple each produced a fumble recovery.
Midget Division

Terminators 22, Warriors 0
Defense provided the charge that ignited the Terminators to the shutout.

On the defensive side of the scrimmage line, Dustin Knox returned a fumble 35 yards for a touchdown, while Scoop Coleman, Justin Jones, Clayton Reid and Caleb Keller all chalked up four tackles each. Connor Howard and Bravo had two tackles apiece.

On offense, Jones connected with receiver Daniel Calhoun on a 20-yard touchdown pass, Devonte Coleman rattled off a 20-yard scoring run and then christened play in the second half with a 50-yard kickoff return for a strike. Knox rounded out the scoring with his fumble return, while Jones’ toss to Damarae Campbell accounted for a two-point conversion play.

In the Warriors camp, Chris Phifer carried the load with 30 yards of offense.

On defense, Zach Sulek and Cody Wagner racked up three stops each. Boby Johnson had a 17-yard kickoff return to open the game.

Hornets 8, Cougars 0
Grinding out the yards, the Hornets offensive unit kept the Cougars’ counterparts off the field and also accounted for the game’s only scoring.

Gary Lowe tallied the game’s lone touchdown on an eight-yard bull run, toting would-be Cougars tacklers with him into the end zone. Shane Gottberg added the two-ponit conversion on an over-the-shoulder catch from quarterback Tommy Bullock. The offensive line play of Triston Price, Derrick Proctor, Christian Bostic, Ryan Gabriel and center Teyonta Davis allowed the eventual winners to eat up much of the game possession clock. The running of Emanuel Johnson, Devan Watts, Jacob Wessell, Shane Dodd and Chris Adelphio all made plays that also kept the ball in the Hornets’ nest.

Defensively, Adelphio’s two clutch interceptions coupled with the play of Bullock, Wessell, Lowe and Dodd shut down any Cougars march. Linebackers Gottberg and Kane Price teamed with linemen Price, Gabriel, Proctor and Davis to also control flow at the scrimmage line.
