Mixed results in midget football
All the good news for the Mooresville Midget Football League within the Southland Football League play last weekend came complete with the bad.
That was the case as, for the first of two times all season, MMFL teams squared off against each other in both the SFL Pee Wee and Midget divisions in games additionally spiced by the fact that it accounted for the first time they squads set foot on the new synthetic playing surface on their home Mooresville Stadium field.
In games played in the Pee Wee division, the Warriors trimmed the Hornets, 6-0, and the Terminators nipped the Cougars, 16-14, while in the Midget class, the Warriors inched past the Hornets, 8-0 in overtime, the Hornets stung the Warriors, 28-6, and the Cougars clawed past the Terminators, 14-0.
Pee Wee Division
Warriors 8, Hornets 0 (OT)
For the victors, Kellen Hall paced the troops with 60 yards rushing and also accounted for what proved to be winning touchdown as well as handled the conversion carry in the extra possession period. Noah Allen added 35 yards rushing to the charge.
On defense, the Warriors were led by Juan Willis’ 10 tackles. Derrick Moreland added five tackles and made the initial hit that ended the Hornets overtime drive. Chase Monroe and Hull also aided the cause with five tackles each.
Cougars 16, Terminators 14
A second two-point conversion by one team stood up as the difference as difference. For the winners, Cameron Dunlap covered 81 yards rushing with a touchdown and two-point tote, while backfield running mate Lewis Thompson chipped in with 38 yards on the ground with a TD and successful two-point plow.
On defense, Blake Gooding gobbled up a fumble recovery while chalking up three tackles, while Matt Koehler also pounded on a Terminators fumble. Bryan Izzo picked up a pair of tackles. On special team play, Colton Pierce accounted for a 45-yard kickoff that was unable to be returned by the foes.
Midget Division
Hornets 28, Warriors 6
Three touchdowns on the ground and a fourth through the airways propelled the Hornets. Gary Lowe scratched twice on TD carries and also accounted for a conversion run, while Emanuel Johnson logged in with a scoring jaunt and also punched in a conversion. Shane Gottberg was on the receiving end of a quarterback Tommy Bullock past for another strike.
On defense for the winners, who held the foes scoreless until the third period, Jordan Maw picked up several tackles for loss, while the play of Bryce Thomas, Teyonta Davis, Gottberg, Kane Price, Jacob Wessell and Bullock also anchored the unit. Troy Garrett was also credited with a saving tackle on a kickoff return.
For the Warriors, Christopher Phifer paved the way with his 97 yards rushing and scored the lone touchdown. Running room was made possible courtesy of the blocking efforts of linemen Wade Phllips, Marcus Torrence, Christian Walker, and Dylan Wilcox.
On defense, Walker paced the Warriors with seven tackles, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Phifer and Jacob Engle added five tackles each. On special teams, Thomas Walker, Timothy Coffey, and Boby Johnson all made plays that stood out on kick coverage
Cougars 14, Terminators 0
A physical battle between the brothers turned out in the Cougars favor. For the victors, Ty Whitney ran for 147 yards and both touchdowns. He also completed his busy day by bulling his way for one conversion carry. Back Robert Barry pitched in with 56 yards on the ground, while Cougars quarterback Avante Parham came way with 33 yards rushing. Parham also hooked up with receivers Barry and Gunnar Boyd for 66 aerial yards.
It was the Cougars defense, though, that stole the show, despite being backed up deep in its own territory on two occasions to preserve the shutout. Dondre Howell’s 10 tackles combined with Parham’s six tackles, a forced fumble and pass interception keyed the effort. Also helping apply the clamps for the Cougars included Glenn Izzo, Jesse Walker, Tyler Diehl, Barry, Zachary Wardlow, Whitney and Markel Norris.
Cougars 26, Trojans 2
From earlier this season, after spotting the foes a 2-0 lead, the Cougars came roaring back to post the win. Parham passed 35 yards to Norris for one score and raced 26 yards for another. Barry also accounted for a score with a 14-yard scamper, and reserve Wardlow completed the rout with a 45-yard TD scoot. Whitney also forced his way into the end zone on a conversion carry.
Defensively, the effort that basically recorded the shutout was anchored in part by Walker, Diehl, Sir Henry Miller, Howell, Whitney, Barry, Bailey Pope, and Justin King.
Upcoming games
All eight MMFL teams are back in action this week in games taking place on the Newton-Conover High School field. Two Warriors take on Balls Creek, the two Terminators tackles Claremont, the Hornets face off against Sherrills Ford, and the Cougars go face-to-face with the Cavaliers.
