MOORESVILLE—Not on Caroline Moffett’s watch.

Mooresville, ranked fourth in the 3A state coaches poll, was on the verge of doing something rare Wednesday, but Moffett wouldn’t have it. The Lake Norman senior scored with 12 minutes left and the second-ranked Wildcats escaped with a thrilling 3-2 win over their archrival.

“This was one of the most exciting games I’ve ever been a part of,” Moffett said.

“It was the last time I was going to play Mooresville … so I was just like, ‘We’re not losing.’ ”

The Blue Devils knotted the game at 2-all in the 63rd minute when Tiffany Wilson pocketed the ball from about 12 yards out off senior Brittney Dailey’s free kick.

“When we scored that second goal and tied them, you just want to get another one and beat them,” Dailey said.

Dailey was a freshman in 2005 when Mooresville handed Lake Norman its only conference loss in program history.

However, Moffett’s second tally of the game Wednesday spoiled the Blue Devils’ hopes of duplicating the magic of that 1-0 victory.

Alyssa Retundie served the ball to the front of the net, and Moffett leaped high to nudge it with her head. The ball tucked under the crossbar and passed the outstretched hands of Mooresville keeper Caroline Harwell.

“It was a perfect pass,” Moffett said. “I just flicked it on (net).”

Mooresville (14-2, 11-2 NPC) was unable to recover from the deflating turn of events. It did manage one final shot on goal in the 77th minute, but Wildcats keeper Mollie Zimmer made the save.

“We’ve always been rivals, so we don’t give up on them — ever,” Dailey said.

Emmie Tyson’s goal, assisted by Courtney Smith, gave Mooresville a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute, but Lake Norman (14-0-1, 12-0 NPC) answered with two scores in the final eight minutes of the first half.

Hannah Graham scored off a Lauren Vawter corner kick, and Moffett buried an unassisted shot.

Lake Norman never trailed again, and now it holds a 1½-game lead in the race for the conference title.

“It was big,” Lake Norman coach Jon Mertes said, “but our work’s not done.”
